フィンランドの国歌は1848年5月13日、学生の集会で初めて歌われる。

作詞：ヨハン・ルドヴィグ・リューネベリー（Johan Luduig Runeberg 1804-1877）
作曲：フェデリック・パシウス（Fredric Pacius 1809-1891）
パシウスは19世紀のフィンランド音楽史上の中心人物といわれている。
最初スウェーデン語で書かれたが、のちにカヤンデル（P.Kajander）と マンニネン（O.Manninen）がフォンランド語に翻訳したのだという。
